Three Ways IT Leaders Need to Adjust Post-Pandemic, According to Tech Entrepreneur Brian Colpak

Brian Colpak, the founder of Continental Global, discusses three main ways IT leaders need to reimagine business technology after the pandemic.

Work will never be the same even after the global pandemic ends. The pandemic forced businesses around the globe to make adjustments overnight, and the operations of most may still be months away from returning.

In many ways, the pandemic has forced companies to repurpose and reimagine how they conduct business going forward. And at the center of this repurposing and reimagination are IT leaders, who will be tasked with making it happen.

Tech entrepreneur Brian Colpak says there are three main ways in which IT leaders will need to approach doing business as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Get in the Cloud

Although moving data, information, and systems to the cloud was something many companies had already begun to do before 2020, the pandemic emphasized the importance of doing so.

Employees need to be able to access data and systems from anywhere, at any time. Before the pandemic, work-from-home was done in mostly rare and special circumstances. That’s no longer desired by employees and companies alike — nor even possible in many cases.

Systems that are only accessible via the office (or with office equipment) aren’t viable anymore.

2. Integrate Systems

Along the same lines, IT leaders are realizing that systems can no longer be disjointed. Payroll and other Human Resources data can’t be on a standalone system from sales and marketing — even though the basic data has little to do with each other.

Every system needs to be able to “talk” with all other systems to ensure a seamless flow of data and information.

As Brian Colpak points out, the pandemic showed the vulnerability of having disjointed systems when employees were forced to work from all different parts of the world.

3. Become Agile

IT is one department that’s well-known for being rigid. It creates a set of rules, a blueprint for how things are done, and doesn’t deviate from that plan. The pandemic highlighted just how inefficient and ineffective such an approach is.

While it may be uncomfortable for IT leaders to think in terms of agility, it’s essential for business success following the pandemic.

IT leaders can think of this agility in terms of data backups. It’s always a good idea to have another copy of data on hand at a different location. This ensures that, if disaster strikes at the main office, the business can still operate.

These fail-safes need to be set up not just for data today but also for the company’s processes and the people who execute them. IT leaders need to educate and train multiple employees to handle important tasks. Then, they need to do the same for the leaders of all other departments, so the business isn’t reliant on a few individuals to operate.

These are just three of the many ways Brian Colpak says IT leaders will need to adjust their way of thinking moving forward out of the pandemic.
