FORT WAYNE, Ind. – September 28, 2026 – The National Weather Service puts Fort Wayne’s average first 32-degree freeze at October 15, with patchy frost typically arriving in the first days of the month. The earliest freeze on record for the city landed on September 23. Two different deadlines, and homeowners tend to mix them up
Duration says the distinction between exterior and interior work is the thing worth understanding before scheduling anything this fall.
Outdoor slabs are governed by the weather, full stop. Surface temperature, overnight lows, dew point, and the chance of rain all have to cooperate across the application and cure period. A patio, pool deck or walkway coated too close to a freeze risks poor adhesion and a finish that never reaches full hardness.
Garages are a different situation, and the answer depends on the product. Standard epoxy needs roughly 50 to 55 degrees to cross-link properly. “People call in November assuming they missed it. For a garage, usually they haven’t,” Diven said. “For the patio, they have. Those are two different conversations and we would rather have both of them in September than one of them in April.”
Why waiting on a garage still costs money
Even where the coating can wait, Duration says the concrete cannot.
Fort Wayne garages take on road salt every time a vehicle pulls in off a treated street, and that salt sits on bare concrete for months. Combined with repeated freeze-thaw cycling, water that works into the slab expands, hairline cracks widen, and surfaces that were sound in September can be spalling by February. The practical consequence is a larger repair scope in the spring than the same floor would have needed in the fall.
“A slab that needs minor crack repair in October needs real work in April,” Diven said. “Waiting doesn’t save money. It just moves the cost and adds four months of salt exposure you didn’t have to take.”
The company also flags a common cold-weather mistake for homeowners comparing contractors. Propane and kerosene heaters used to warm a space during application produce combustion byproducts that can leave a film on the curing surface and cause the coating to fail to bond.
